Animated GIFs also work in fixed-layout EPUBs, and are great for creating effects that you cannot make with InDesign’s animation tools (e.g. people walking or objects rotating). So this made me wonder if I could create unique animated effects by combining animated GIFs with InDesign animations.

Placing Animated GIFs in InDesign You can of course, place animated GIFs into your documents, but InDesign has (almost) no idea that the images are supposed to be animated. Since the file is not recognized as a video, the Media panel is empty and you can't assign a button action to play the GIF. So, yes, InDesign will see any gif as a raster image. Whether or not that gif has a background color is completely dependent upon the original artwork and how you are saving it as a gif.
